Phase 2 of ER Expansion Underway Soon

Starting April 2, Phase 2 of the ER Expansion will kick into high gear. Site clean up and demo will begin and carry throughout the first weeks of April, followed by electrical, HVAC duct work, drywall and more.

If the state comes on Monday, March 26th and passes Phase 1 of the new ER, work could begin sooner. However, the hospital still needs 48 hours to move into the completed Phase 1 facility before demo and work on Phase 2 can begin. So, the earliest that Phase 2 can begin is Thursday, March 29.

ER+ Opening in April, New Orthopedic Surgeon Coming to Jerseyville & JCH Health Fair this Friday

The 26th annual JCH Health Fair is this Friday!  We’ll have the coffee on at the Lean Bean at 6 AM, but please have your fasting lab tests done before enjoying the java. In honor of St. Patty’s Day, Lean Bean’s special for the day will be a 16 oz Irish Cream Latte for $1.99. So come, get your tests done, and enjoy some coffee and conversation with friends! The New ER+ Opening in April!


Finally, we have word from the State of Illinois that the ER is scheduled for occupancy inspection!  We notified the Illinois Department of Public Health on January 3rd that phase one was complete and ready to be used, then sat here and not-so-patiently waited.
According to the project’s architect John Shortal, who received a call from the state on Monday, we will be getting our long-awaited visit from the state during the last week of March. After that, we’ll be ready to move from the present ER into our new facility during the first week of April.
The move to the new ER will signal a series of changes that we want you to be aware of:
  • The new “front door” of the ER and Admissions faces Maple Summit, next to the Business Office/Gift Shop entry.  We’ll make sure that signage is clear and helpful. 
  • Temporarily, we’ll lose the patient entry to the north, using the new canopy only for ambulances and the super urgent.  
  • The old admissions area and ER will be shuttered for remodeling.  
  • The original outside walls of the ER will be removed to make way for a large and efficient Nurses Station, giving staff visual access to each of the fourteen rooms.  
  • With the delay from the State, we are now expecting a final completion date in June.

New Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Tom Bilko
Also in June, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Tom Bilko, will be joining IMA.  Dr. Bilko is a Pennsylvania native and will bring a complete line of orthopedics to the community, with a focus on total joints and scopes. He also has a strong background in Sports Medicine. Dr. Bilko and his wife Cindy are currently house-hunting in and around Jerseyville. He will have his office at the Jerseyville IMA building and practice full time here.

Exercise is better in a group!

Group exercise is an exciting way to get fit and the JCH Wellness Center has something for everyone. Early March is when we typically start to see people giving up on their New Year Resolutions, but this year is different. I’m so excited to say that the attendance in our classes isn’t just holding strong, they are growing! What is it about joining a group exercise class that makes fitness more fun? Is it the high dose of energy and motivation provided by the instructor, social support from class participants, structure of the class format, meeting new people? Whatever it is, people love being a part of a group. The instructors at the Wellness Center have developed such a great rapport with participants that it has become a fitness family.

Don’t let water exercise fool you, it is a workout! There are always smiles on the faces of participants in the lap pool classes as they kick, jog, dance through the water. The very popular Water Basketball class is a great way to get your workout while acting like a kid again! The lap pool is full of energy during Aqua Zumba, the ultimate pool party.

For those participants needing something a little more low-key due to achy joints, the therapy pool is the place to be. Certified arthritis instructors lead the groups through exercises to stretch, strengthen and help ease joint pain. These workouts are great for the body and the mind.

The music and whoo hoos coming from the group exercise room will definitely get your attention. The energy from Zumba flows throughout the facility. Zumba is a calorie burning dance party that everyone wants to be a part of. Zumba Gold is equally as fun, but is modified to meet the needs of baby-boomers or anyone just getting started on their fitness journey. If you need to pump it up, but do not want to go to the weight room, join a BodyPump class for the ultimate barbell workout. How about a hardcore workout in just 30 minutes? If that sounds good, try CXWorx to improve your core strength and endurance. Yoga, indoor cycling and kickboxing are just a few other of the great classes offered to help get you in tip-top shape and keep you motivated.

Regardless of your fitness goals, group exercise is the place to be. There is just something about belonging to a group that makes it more enjoyable. It is motivating to look around the room at the variety of people working to improve their health. It isn’t easy for anyone to make the time and commitment to exercise, but when you see your new friends in the class it encourages you to work a little harder and keep coming back for more.
