Jersey Community Hospital- Safety Score Card

By Larry Bear, JCH Administrator

Recently the Leapfrog Group has published unfavorable information about our Hospital. To set the record straight, we offer the following information:

Everyone at JCH works hard on patient safety every day. We work continuously on medication safety, patient falls, and infection control. We elected not to participate with the Leap Frog 2012 survey because historically the data has been shown to be inaccurate and out of date. Instead, efforts were focused on making things better in lots of differing ways.
  • JCH has had computerized inpatient records since 1995.  ER records were computerized during 2012.  We were one of the first Hospitals in the country to be recognized by CMS under HITECH act for “meaningful use” of electronic health records (EHR).
  • Computerized Physician Order Entry has been in place since October of 2009; online, real-time links with area physician groups are up and functioning well for the transmission of test results, dictation, and images.
  • Digital images are made available to staff physicians anywhere there is a secure internet connection by virtue of the 2010 installation of the JCH PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).
  • In the last 12 months, JCH has added the Omnicell automated medication system and smart IV pumps with an onboard medical library to minimize medication errors and increase patient safety.
  •  In December 2012, the CPSI MED VERIFY will be activated, allowing nurses and pharmacists to use bar codes to get the right patient the right medication at the right time.
  • JCH is an active participant with the Illinois Hospital Association’s Hospital Engagement Network (HEN,) whose primary goals are the reduction of readmissions by 20% and the reduction of avoidable patient harm by 40%.
  • JCH also participates with The Joint Commission (TJC,) a national accrediting body that reviews patient records for quality patient care at least every three years.
  • JCH voluntarily participates with the National Healthcare Safety Network (HNSN,) which monitors and educates in the areas of urinary, blood and post-op infections.
  • JCH also is a member of the St. Louis University Hospital’s Stroke Network, dedicated to the rapid recognition and early intervention through coordination, education, and adherence to protocols.  We are also mobilizing for application to the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care for accreditation as a Chest Pain Center in 2013.

New Medication-Dispensing Practices Boost Patient Safety

This summer, the JCH ER welcomed a new addition to its ranks – the Omnicell® automated dispensing cabinet (ADC). What does that mean for patients? Simple, faster medication delivery and
increased patient safety.

The JCH Omnicell ADC, which looks a little like a fancy vending machine, is equipped with fingerprint identification and 2D barcode scanning that act as safety checks on medications during the dispense, return and restock processes. “With over 800 medications currently in the Omnicell, this system helps our staff get the right medication to our patients on time and in the most efficient manner,” says JCH Head Pharmacist, Susan Guntren. “The innovative bar code verification feature also increases our overall security as we can easily track and monitor when medications are taken out and restocked.” According to Guntren, about 62% of hospitals the size of JCH use ADCs as their primary distribution method for medications. Of those, only 38% use the bar coding feature when restocking.
Kerry Werner, RN in ER uses the Omnicell at JCH

JCH started using the bar code verification feature right away, however, which will simplify the change in procedures in November, when the bar-coded medication administration system is implemented. “In administering medication via the bar code system, we can make sure patients are receiving the correct medications and dosages while simultaneously meeting the ever-changing compliance and safe practice regulations,” said Larry Bear, CEO of Jersey Community Hospital. “We want our patients to know we’re not just throwing medication at them and that there are processes in place to ensure there are no unnecessary reactions.”

JCH was one of the first hospitals in Illinois to be certified for “Meaningful Use” by CMS and is well on the way to the second tier of this computerized medical record designation. In addition to ADCs and its bar-coded medication administration system, JCH has also:
• switched to computerized physician order entry – 100% of all
orders are now submitted this way
• implemented the use of smart pumps with over 46 medications
currently programmed
• added a new unit dose bar code packaging system
• installed automated temperature monitoring systems in
departments that are only open during the day so medications
can be monitored centrally

These improvements are a direct result of talented clinical managers, dedicated physicians, and a commitment from the organization’s leaders to maximum patient safety and efficiency.

First Annual Jersey Junior Triathlon

By Jen Rogers, Fitness Coordinator at the JCH Wellness Center

We proudly celebrated a healthy new tradition! On Saturday, August 18th, 68 local kids geared up at Dolan Park in Jerseyville and participated in the first annual Jersey Junior Triathlon.

The event was sponsored by the JCH Wellness Center and the Jerseyville Parks and Recreation department. Participants ages 5 to 8 competed in a 25-yard swim in the Donor Pool, a one-mile bike ride and a half-mile run. Participants ages 9 to 12 competed in a 75-yard swim, a two-mile bike ride and a one-mile run.

The day’s festivities were all about fun and fitness with all finishers receiving an awards medal and an event t-shirt. Many participants were local, but we had kids travel as far as Elsah, Godfrey, Alton, Edwardsville and even Indiana to participate since youth triathlons are a bit of a rarity.

The event was a huge success! It was great to see so many young people being so active, plus the tremendous parental support. Mark your calendars for next year. We’ll be sure to do it again!

Meet Dr. Lamping -- An Experienced, Dedicated OB/GYN

My last post boasted the quality care women can expect from JCH. Now, I want to highlight one of our newer doctors providing services to women... Dr. Daniel Lamping of Illini Medical Associates.

For the past year, JCH and women throughout our community have benefited from the 30+ years of experience Dr. Lamping brings to our Women’s Healthcare Services. Board Certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Lamping encourages and coaches new moms throughout their pregnancies, gets to experience the joy on a family’s face after he’s delivered a new baby, and helps women make informed choices about their health. He truly loves what he does and that is evidenced in the amount of time he spends with patients.

Dorothy Talley, RN and OR Manager at JCH, and others have commented about the level of care Lamping provides his patients, stating that “he shows true compassion for his patients and takes time to make sure they understand the procedure they are about to undergo.”

Since he started seeing patients in August 2011, JCH has seen an increase with all procedures. Dr. Lamping specializes in gynecologic and obstetric care, nutrition, contraception, hormone replacement therapy and most importantly, minimally invasive procedures, which many women have taken advantage. He also performs many diagnostic procedures such as hysteroscopy and D&C, as well as sterilization procedures through hysteroscopy, which requires no incision and less healing time!

Dr. Lamping has an office at both the Jerseyville and Carlinville clinics and has privileges at Jersey Community Hospital. He practiced in St. Louis for 32 years before joining Illini Medical Associates in August 2011. He is a graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his OB/GYN residency at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, also in St. Louis. Dr. Lamping is also actively involved in several associations including the American Medical Association, the Missouri State Medical Association, and the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists. He is currently accepting new patients.

Well Women Care for the Generations

Did you know JCH is home to some of the nicest labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum (LDRP) rooms in the area?  At least that’s what many of our moms have told us after they’ve spent a few days here welcoming the newest addition to their family. But a nicely decorated, comfortable room isn’t the only thing the JCH Women’s Center offers women in our community. We also offer top-notch, personal care.

JCH Women's Center LDRP Room
Covering everything from well women exams and birth control counseling to prenatal care and menopause therapy, JCH Women’s Center provides generations of women quality obstetric and gynecological services. Additional services include gynecological surgeries – with an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures, tubal ligations, mammograms, ultrasounds and various other diagnostic services such as X-rays, MRIs, Cat Scans and Nuclear Medicine.

I’m proud to say we also have three excellent OB/GYN physicians working here at JCH: Dr. Daniel Lamping, Dr. Elaine Sharp and Dr.Batool Vali. Dr. Lamping has 33 years of experience, Dr. Sharp has 27 and Dr. Vali has 37. All are accepting new patients and each is committed to getting to know and understand your individual healthcare needs.

So if you don’t have a doctor you see on a regular basis or are looking to find one closer to home, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with either Dr. Lamping, Dr. Sharp or Dr. Vali.  They are all located right here in Jerseyville, saving you time, hassle, stress and the expense of having to travel elsewhere for exceptional women’s care.

Stellar Turnout at ER+ Open House Makes for Amazing Tribute to Entire Fundraising Campaign

A true cause for celebration, roughly 700 people including staff, donors and community members came out in force for an impressive peek at the new JCH ER+.

In honor of the new ER+, JCH hosted a two-day community-wide event on June 27 and 28, 2012, complete with guided tours, food, free gifts and lots to cheer about. On Wednesday, a breakfast was held for staff with lovely fruit and pastries to kick off the day. Festivities continued with an appetizer reception to honor all donors in the evening followed by the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon. To wrap up the night, there was an open house for members of the Jersey County Business Association.

Nearly 300 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, while 200 employees and another 200 community members braved the disagreeable heat to participate in the public Open House festivities on Thursday. The reviews were unanimous: “It’s huge, it’s functional, it’s bright, and best of all, it’s right here at home!” This stellar turnout was an amazing tribute to the entire campaign. Exciting highlights of the Grand Opening event included the presentation of a half million dollar check from the JCH Foundation in addition to a generous $2,500 check presentation from the Spring Organ/Tissue Donor Awareness Fundraising Run.

We knew the unveiling was going to be awesome, but I think all were surprised when the barrier between the new and the remodeled area came down. The nurses’ station is beautiful. One eight-year-old visitor said the counter tops “were pretty and looked like they had been sprinkled with pepper.” The well-lit work area is accented by bright yellow walls with shining tile floors accented in navy blue. The finishing touches on the central monitoring system are underway, the computerized medicine cabinet is ready for its final move and the last four patient areas (fourteen in all) are getting their bedside computers and patient televisions. Storage and work space abounds, and the staff is itching to enjoy the convenience of the support areas. But again, we’ll have to wait on the state. Before we can have patient occupancy of the additional four rooms, we have to have a life-safety inspection by the Department of Public Health.  I’ll be calling their office daily to see if we’re on the schedule.

I would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to everyone who made this ER+ project possible and the Grand Opening event such a huge success. Several of the attendees were rather sophisticated in their understanding of the healthcare drama that’s been evolving over time in the United States. It was a great experience to get to meet so many of our supporters.
Stay tuned.

ER + Opening Celebration

Because of our amazing new ER+, open since April, the entire hospital is buzzing with excitement and pride. Anticipation builds as the Jersey County Business Association and JCH prepare to host a community-wide celebration on Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28. Finally, this is your chance to get a sneak peek at the end results of three years of planning, dedication and hard work.

The two-day celebration will begin June 27 from 6 – 9 a.m. as JCH employees, staff and physicians enjoy a Staff Open House and Morning Breakfast. The day’s celebration will continue at 4 p.m. with an appetizer reception for all donors followed by a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 5 p.m. and an Open House for the Jersey County Business Association from 5-7 p.m.

We invite you all to see firsthand what the overwhelming support from countless donors in our community has accomplished. Come celebrate with us inside the front lobby of our new ER+. Festivities for the Community Open House will take place June 28 from 4 – 7 p.m. There will be guided tours, refreshments and free gifts for all.

We are thrilled to have this opportunity to provide enhanced emergency care. Our new ER+ has already started paying off in measurable ways. Wait and overall visit times have gotten shorter, plus the added room gives our patients the privacy and comfort they deserve.

Now that we’ve expanded, remodeled and are open for care, the new JCH ER+ features fourteen patient care areas for trauma-related and minor emergencies, plus an expanded care team. Other key features include three separate waiting areas, a soundproof nurses’ station for additional privacy and quiet, plus larger supply rooms and staff support facilities.

This project coming to fruition is a shining example of the positive change our dynamic community can make. Together, we’ve changed the face of emergency medicine. This new ER+ will allow us to take patient care many steps further than ever before. Thank you all!

Phase 2 of ER Expansion Underway Soon

Starting April 2, Phase 2 of the ER Expansion will kick into high gear. Site clean up and demo will begin and carry throughout the first weeks of April, followed by electrical, HVAC duct work, drywall and more.

If the state comes on Monday, March 26th and passes Phase 1 of the new ER, work could begin sooner. However, the hospital still needs 48 hours to move into the completed Phase 1 facility before demo and work on Phase 2 can begin. So, the earliest that Phase 2 can begin is Thursday, March 29.

Learn more about the Health Fair and available tests now.

The New ER+ Opening in April!

Finally, we have word from the State of Illinois that the ER is scheduled for occupancy inspection!  We notified the Illinois Department of Public Health on January 3rd that phase one was complete and ready to be used, then sat here and not-so-patiently waited.
According to the project’s architect John Shortal, who received a call from the state on Monday, we will be getting our long-awaited visit from the state during the last week of March. After that, we’ll be ready to move from the present ER into our new facility during the first week of April.
The move to the new ER will signal a series of changes that we want you to be aware of:
  • The new “front door” of the ER and Admissions faces Maple Summit, next to the Business Office/Gift Shop entry.  We’ll make sure that signage is clear and helpful.
  • Temporarily, we’ll lose the patient entry to the north, using the new canopy only for ambulances and the super urgent.
  • The old admissions area and ER will be shuttered for remodeling.
  • The original outside walls of the ER will be removed to make way for a large and efficient Nurses Station, giving staff visual access to each of the fourteen rooms.
  • With the delay from the State, we are now expecting a final completion date in June.

New Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Tom Bilko
Also in June, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Tom Bilko, will be joining IMA.  Dr. Bilko is a Pennsylvania native and will bring a complete line of orthopedics to the community, with a focus on total joints and scopes. He also has a strong background in Sports Medicine. Dr. Bilko and his wife Cindy are currently house-hunting in and around Jerseyville. He will have his office at the Jerseyville IMA building and practice full time here.
Hope you’re enjoying this week’s preview of summer!

Exercise is better in a group!

Guest Blogger:
Jen Lyles
Group exercise is an exciting way to get fit and the JCH Wellness Center has something for everyone. Early March is when we typically start to see people giving up on their New Year Resolutions, but this year is different. I’m so excited to say that the attendance in our classes isn’t just holding strong, they are growing! What is it about joining a group exercise class that makes fitness more fun? Is it the high dose of energy and motivation provided by the instructor, social support from class participants, structure of the class format, meeting new people? Whatever it is, people love being a part of a group. The instructors at the Wellness Center have developed such a great rapport with participants that it has become a fitness family.

Don’t let water exercise fool you, it is a workout! There are always smiles on the faces of participants in the lap pool classes as they kick, jog, dance through the water. The very popular Water Basketball class is a great way to get your workout while acting like a kid again! The lap pool is full of energy during Aqua Zumba, the ultimate pool party.

Aqua Therapy with
Certified Instructors
For those participants needing something a little more low-key due to achy joints, the therapy pool is the place to be. Certified arthritis instructors lead the groups through exercises to stretch, strengthen and help ease joint pain. These workouts are great for the body and the mind.

The music and whoo hoos coming from the group exercise room will definitely get your attention. The energy from Zumba flows throughout the facility. Zumba is a calorie burning dance party that everyone wants to be a part of. Zumba Gold is equally as fun, but is modified to meet the needs of baby-boomers or anyone just getting started on their fitness journey. If you need to pump it up, but do not want to go to the weight room, join a BodyPump class for the ultimate barbell workout. How about a hardcore workout in just 30 minutes? If that sounds good, try CXWorx to improve your core strength and endurance. Yoga, indoor cycling and kickboxing are just a few other of the great classes offered to help get you in tip-top shape and keep you motivated.

Regardless of your fitness goals, group exercise is the place to be. There is just something about belonging to a group that makes it more enjoyable. It is motivating to look around the room at the variety of people working to improve their health. It isn’t easy for anyone to make the time and commitment to exercise, but when you see your new friends in the class it encourages you to work a little harder and keep coming back for more.

The Flu Surges in Jerseyville, Our Wellness Center is Jumping & New Doctors Join the Team!

Type A flu is upon us.  In a sudden surge last week, we saw scores of people in the medical offices, ER and ER Plus suffering with the malady.  It’s the usual set of symptoms, but this year’s version starts more in the head and works its way down to the chest.  As you can imagine, it’s pretty miserable, so encourage your family to cough like Count Dracula (into your elbow as if hiding behind your cape), wash hands often, and do all those other things your mother told you... take a daily vitamin, get enough sleep, and get regular exercise. Really, mom does know best!
JCH Wellness Center

Speaking of exercise, things are jumping at the JCH Wellness Center.  Class coordinator Jenifer Lyles tells me that participation is at an all time high. Good for you, members and guests!  She’s so excited about our programs that she’s volunteered to write our next blog on the subject, so stay tuned.

We called the State on January 3rd to inform them that phase one of the ER project was done and ready for inspection. Checking with them a couple of weeks ago, we were told that they could not get here until at least the month of March. So, it’s pretty... it’s done... and we cannot use it, yet.  Our license comes from the IllinoisDepartment of Public Health, and they require that a Certificate of Occupancy be issued prior to habitation by patients.  Anyone who would like a tour before we open can just stop by and ask for me.  I’d be delighted to take you on the 10-minute tour!

Dr. Jon Andersen
My congratulations to Illini Medical Associates on bringing the community new physician resources! For IMA, Dr. Jon Andersen is an experienced General Surgeon who has been working in the Carlinville area.  With the departure of Dr. Talcherkar, Dr. Andersen was a natural fit for the group and JCH.  Dr. Anderson does a complete General Surgery practice, including laproscopic work, endoscopy, and hernia repair.  Also joining JCH from Medical Associates is Dr. Mark Giovanelli.  Dr. Giovanelli is a Family Practitioner – moving to Jerseyville from Iowa City, Iowa – and will do pediatrics, adult medicine and geriatrics along with his associates, Drs. Don Murray and Sonja Schleeper.  Welcome to both new Docs!

We've Reached the Halfway Mark!

April 2012 will be an exciting time for JCH as we are all looking forward to the opening of our new emergency center. To date the new emergency center is currently halfway to done. We’re also more than halfway to reaching our fundraising goal of $1,000,000.

The combination of state-of-the-art equipment, more space and additional staff will mean even better care for our patients... those are all good reasons to be excited for this new addition. But there are also many more bonuses for our patients.

The new building increases the current ER space from 4,000 square feet to 9,000 square feet – more than double its former size. In addition, the new ER+ has been designed to accommodate not only current needs, but those that are anticipated for the future as well – like an exam room specifically geared for mental health patients and a decontamination room that can be used in case of exposure to chemical agents. Both rooms will enable staff to safely and securely treat patients without disrupting the care of other patients. I've posted some photos to give you a sneak peak of the progress.

The general contractor for the project, Contegra, has been great to work with. They anticipate completion of the second phase – renovation of the existing ER space – sometime in March. Eric Gowin, Contegra’s president, expressed they have been thankful to be part of our new ER, and that construction has gone very smoothly with great cooperation from the local subcontractors as well as the hospital staff.

To make a donation and get the latest updates on the JCH ER project, visit www.jch.org/erplus! Also, watch the media, newsletter and website for announcements regarding an Open House in the spring!
